The Triad Model United Nations attended the McKendree Fall Conference on November 8 and 9. The fall session is considered a practice session for the spring session and the largest conference Triad attends in Chicago.
Of the 44 delegates attending from Triad, 15 of them obtained committee awards, received by showing superior knowledge of topics given in each committee, along with an outstanding written resolution on the topic.
The large number of awards from Triad was well received by teacher representatives Kelli Barbour and Karen Kutz. The performance was “pretty impressive, considering Triad was one of 15 schools,” said Kutz.
Awards given were Outstanding Delegate to junior Jessie Skaggs, Superior Delegates to seniors Jimmy Konsky, Ben Posmanick and Corey Walters, juniors Ryan Mehallow, Michael Nickerson, Meagan Winer, Jacob Repp, Matt Guse, Evan Bosaw and Tre Callahan and sophomore Kelcie Carrol and Honorable Mention to sophomore Baili Volluz and freshmen Joe Bednara and Nathan Counts.
Triad delegates represented the eight nations of Nigeria, Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, India, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Spain and Georgia in the eight different committees of 1st Political, 3rd Social, 6th Legal, Economic and Social, Science and Technology, Special Political, Security Council and Expanded Security Council.
Model UN offers a wide variety of topics amongst the committees ranging from world economy, nuclear nonproliferation (eradication of nuclear weapons), trafficking of human organs and current science and technology.
“It has been a lot of fun because I have learned a lot of things,” said junior Madison Havel, a first year Model UN delegate and a representative of the nation of India in the committee Economic and Social.
In preparing for the spring conference, the fall conference familiarizes delegates with the committee rules as well as the delegates from other schools. “It has given me an opportunity to realize what I need to work on,” said Konsky, a representative of Nigeria in the committee of 1st Political.
Triad also hosts its own model conference known as TRI-MUN. The conference is held in February for junior high schools in the area.
TRI-MUN allows for Triad students to run committees and be in charge of awarding junior high students and their resolutions. This helps to prepare students who wish to continue their Model United Nations practices in a college environment.
Triad Model United Nations will be heading off for McKendree University in April for the spring conference.
